Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about starting therapy, session structure, confidentiality, and telehealth.

What can I expect from our first session?

The first session, often called an intake, is primarily for us to get to know each other. We will discuss your background, current challenges, and goals for therapy. It is also an opportunity for you to see if you feel comfortable and safe working with me. We can also discuss recommended frequency and an initial plan.

How long are the sessions?

Session lengths vary depending on the type of service to ensure the best therapeutic outcome. 50 minutes is for standard individual psychotherapy and light hypnotherapy interventions. 90 minutes is for deep hypnotherapy, couples counseling, and family therapy, where additional time supports deeper integration and ensures each person has space to be heard.

Does insurance cover the longer (90-minute) sessions?

Generally, yes, but it depends on your specific plan. Longer sessions or family therapy are billed under different CPT codes (such as 90837 or 90847). When verifying your benefits, please ask whether your plan covers extended sessions or family therapy and whether there are any frequency limits.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please notify me at least 24 hours in advance. Since your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you, late cancellations or missed sessions are charged the full session fee. Insurance companies typically do not reimburse for missed-session fees.

Is what we discuss confidential?

Absolutely. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy and is protected by law and professional ethics. Nothing we discuss is shared without your written permission, except when legally required: immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, suspicion of child/elder/dependent adult abuse, or a court order.

How is hypnotherapy different from regular talk therapy?

Talk therapy works primarily with the conscious mind to process thoughts and feelings. Hypnotherapy helps access the subconscious mind for deeper change. In many sessions, both approaches can be integrated: conversation to clarify issues, followed by hypnosis to support deeper integration.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. I offer teletherapy via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. If you are in a private space with a stable internet connection, online sessions can be just as effective as in-person care.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please do not wait for a response. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.

If you have other questions or are unsure which approach is right for you, please feel free to email or call. I am happy to help.
